Puerto de Indias

Our 1880 distillery is one of the oldest and most traditional distilleries in Andalusia. It is nurtured by an underground water spring from Roman times, set to put in motion the distillation process in copper stills using traditional techniques.

Research into the Roman remains found on the distillery has been carried out by Bonsor and Collantes, two important archaeologists.

Some of the Roman traces found on this site are the foundations of the Anis Factory, belonging to the period of the High Roman Empire. We also found columns, cisterns, baths and stonework basins, as well as what is believed to have been some thermal baths, due to the characteristic waterproofing deposits of lime plaster and the small rhomboid-shaped bricks.

There are two galleries dating from the same period. The first is located in front of the collecting well and is currently covered, and the second is the one that feeds the Puerto de Indias distillery today.
