Tasting notes of winery's winemaker

The History

Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, Alvi to his friends, established a property south of Worcester in 1928 and began producing small quantities of wine. This property has grown from these humble beginnings to the world-renowned Alvis Drift wine farm today. The “ Albertus Viljoen” range is the best of the harvest, fermented in barrels to produce an outstanding,

complex and full-bodied wine. Bismarck, the beloved Alvis Drift great

Dane, and self-appointed custodian of the cellar was the friendly

welcoming party to any guests visiting the farm. Bismarck, Superior in

stature and loyalty, commanded respect as the undisputed alfalfa male of

the pack. With the Bismarck, we honor his legacy.

The Grapes

The wine is made entirely from estate grown fruit, hand selected in the

early morning to ensure only cool, perfect bunches are delivered to the winery. Maturity reached optimum levels of ripeness approximately 25° Balling.

In The Cellar

The wine was crushed into traditional open fermenters for fermentation. Juice was bled from the skins to improve the color and total phenol levels in the wine. Once fermentation commenced the cap was punched through by hand up to 8 times per day. After fermentation, the wine was matured for 22 months in a combination of French and American Oak barrels of which a third were new.

The Wine

The wine is a blend of 44% Shiraz, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Pinotage. This is an elegant but full-bodied wine, exhibiting plenty of spicy Shiraz pepper fruit and ripe dark fruit characters.
